Nebbiuno

Lago Maggiore

The municipality of Nebbiuno, with its villages Fosseno, Tapigliano and Corciago, stands on the large moraine terrace halfway along the coast of Vergante, from where visitors can enjoy a splendid view of Lake Maggiore. Mentioned in Julius Caesar’s descriptions in the 1st century BC, the name Noviodunon (“new village”) has clear Roman origins, although the finds of tools dating back to the Iron Age and of Roman-Gallic necropolises testify to the fact that the area was already inhabited as early as the 7th century BC. In later centuries, Longobard populations settled the region and the the Archbishop of Milan and the Visconti and Borromeo families also influenced the territory. Nebbiuno enjoys a particularly mild climate that has always favoured both tourism and and a predominantly agricultural tradition. Intensive flower cultivations have become popular forms of agricultural business in more recent times, in particular of camellias and azaleas.

CHURCH OF SAN GIORGIO in Nebbiuno: the first certain information dates back to 1380, although the construction almost certainly dates back to the Longobard period. A fresco of St. George adorns the spot above the entrance.

CHURCH OF SANT’AGATA in Fosseno: construction began in the 14th century, and the church has a rich cycle of frescoes.

CHURCH OF SAN LEONARDO in Tapigliano: the original nucleus dates back to the 12th century. It enjoys a splendid view of the lake.

CHURCH OF SAINTS NAZARO AND CELSO in Corciago: probably one of the hundred churches built by St. Julius in the 4th century.

CAMPIGLIA: an original system of medieval houses crossed by narrow and winding paths. Today this small medieval village is an agricultural estate.

EXCURSIONS: paths through the wooded territory are well marked and can be followed on foot or by mountain bike.
