Museo Antica Casa Walser

Valli dell'Ossola

Museum Network: Associazione Musei d'Ossola

The museum was founded to collect, catalogue, and preserve objects from the daily life of the proud Walser people of Macugnaga.

Volunteers who undertook the meticulous restoration of a valuable 17th-century building created the Old Walser House Museum in Borca (Alts Walserhüs Van Zer Burfuggu) in the 1980s. On three floors, the museum displays a wide range of objects and visual documents relating to the way of life of the past, which characterised the Walser culture and civilisation, and which highlight the values and concrete practices of an ethnolinguistic minority confronted daily with the harshness and difficulties of a high-altitude territory, offering original solutions that are now entirely obsolete. Therefore, a visit to the museum attracts an average of 3,000 visitors a year and is of great historical interest. For this reason, the museum is aimed not only at enthusiasts who appreciate the unknown pages of life in the past but also at schools, which can teach valuable lessons to stimulate and compare with today's reality.
