WOOD CRAFTS IN THE STRONA VALLEY the company "Mastro Geppetto" owned by F.lli Piana & C. was founded by a generation of woodworkers who have been producing chess sets, spheres and columns for over sixty years. The company produces a wide range of excellent products, but their true pride today is their production of over 60 models of the world's most famous puppet, Pinocchio, which they export all over the world. Mastro Geppetto looks to the future with confidence in its own capacity to work, and confident in its ability to continue the work for which it is recognised as a leader and has received recognition for excellence with the trademark "Piemonte Eccellenza Artigiana". Info: www.mastrogeppetto.net [4]
STRONA VALLEY ETHNOGRAPHIC AND CRAFTS MUSEUM The production of turned wooden objects is still a feature of Cusio crafts and, particularly, of crafts made in the Strona Valley. Evidence of turned wood objects being produced in this area was first recorded at the end of the Middle Ages. Today, the Strona Valley is known as "the valley of the Pinocchios" because many businesses have specialized in reproducing the famous puppet, and little Pinocchios produced here are exported throughout the world. The structure that houses the Strona Valley Ethnographic and Craft Museum is the old Torneria Martinoli, owned by the Comunità Montana dello Strona e del Basso Toce since 1999 (today, the Comunità Montana Due Laghi, Cusio, Mottarone e Val Strona). The old Torneria Martinoli has been restored and is now used as a museum. One of the laboratories was recovered, and guests can admire the original machinery and several turned wood objects. A large hall houses temporary exhibitions, and a small ethnographic section has been set up with objects from the private museum "Guerrino Flat". The museum's final room is dedicated to the caves of Sambughetto, and there are also a multimedia classroom and a laboratory. Info: www.lagodorta.net [5]
or (depending on the STRONA VALLEY ETHNOGRAPHIC AND CRAFTS MUSEUM's availability)
MUSEUM OF THE ART OF WOOD TURNING The production of turned wood objects is still very strong in the area of Cusio, and especially in the Strona Valley. In Pettenasco, a small town on the lake shore in the province of Novara, from the mid-nineteenth century, five mills (called "the factories") run by the Roggia Molinara derived from Pescone river, were transformed into wood turning factories. They produced mainly mortars and pestles and the first pepper grinders, and were active until a few decades ago by using water power. The Museum of the Art of Wood Turning is located in one of these factories. Inside, some rooms are filled with turned wood objects. Certain pieces date back to the beginning of the century, and some were made more recently. A fascinating section has been set up in the artisan workshop where the original wood turning tools and machinery are on display. Info: www.lagodorta.net [5]

HISTORICAL RIPENED CHEESE PRODUCERS IN ARONA Since 1876, "Luigi Guffanti" has been selecting and ripening the best cheeses in Italy and Europe. Its ripening caves, where all the passion for precision emerge, are the place were cheeses undergo their final stage. Sometimes, the ageing process lasts several years, and this long process starts with careful planning for artisan quality right from the pasture. These are fundamental rules that the Guffanti-Fiori family has jealously handed down for five generations now. These guidelines enable the company to be present with its cheese in the world's most prestigious restaurants and in fine food shops in Italy and abroad. Info: www.guffantiformaggi.com [10]
ARONA A nice tourist and commercial centre south of Lake Maggiore, during the Middle Ages it was governed by the Visconti Family and then, from 1439 to 1797, by the Borromeo Family (www.comune.arona.no.it [11]). The STATUE of S. CARLO BORROMEO is one of the main attractions of Arona. It was completed in 1698 on orders from Card. Federico Borromeo. Giovan Battista Crespi designed the colossus, made with sheets of hammered copper joined together with nails and tie rods. The statue rests on a granite pedestal to reach a total height of 35.10 m, thus becoming the second highest statue in the world after the Statue of Liberty. It can be visited inside. From the head, visitors can admire the wonderful landscape (www.ambrosiana.eu [12]).

VILLA ANELLI Villa Anelli is a private garden, a splendid example of landscaping architecture from the romantic period and current locations of a large, world renowned collection of camellias. Built in 1872 around rocky cliffs of what is still called Paradise Valley, the garden went through different phases of design before it became the final location, in the second half of the 1900s, of the many cultivar of camellia, which embellish every secret corner of the garden and every winding path with lovely green leaves, to the sound of water from the antique fountains. The collection can be visited during the spring flowering period, when the immense glory of the colours is at its height - with thousands of flowers in hundreds of colours ranging from white to red. Its particular look has allowed Villa Anelli to be on the prestigious list of “Gardens of Excellence”.
VERBANIA This is the largest centre on Lake Maggiore, built in 1939 with the unification of Intra, Pallanza and Suna, and it recently became the capital of the Province of Verbano Cusio Ossola. PALLANZA is a quiet touristic village located in a splendid position in front of the small Island of S. Giovanni and Borromeo Gulf. It has small restaurants, luxurious hotels, large mansions and lovely gardens. Info: www.verbania-turismo.it [14]
THE “TYPICAL FLOWERS OF LAKE MAGGIORE” Compagnia del Lago was created from a business evolution that happened in 1995, an attempt to build a large plant producing company on Lake Maggiore that could sell to all of Europe. Compagnia del Lago has the goal of providing a very important clientèle, though limited size, with plants of azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons and other particular plants that grow on the lake in different sizes and a large number of varieties, all with very precise names. Quality, a broad selection of sizes and the rigorous naming system are its success factors. Today, its plants are present in Portugal, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Austria, the Czech Republic, and naturally in Switzerland, England and Germany, the three main markets. Compagnia del Lago exports 70% of its production to the rest of Europe. Info: www.compagniadellago.com [15]

THE “TYPICAL FLOWERS OF LAKE MAGGIORE” The towns of Vergante, the hilly area over Lake Maggiore, are famous for their excellent production of azaleas, rhododendrons and camelias. The mild climate and soil with the right level of acidity are the features that make these flowers the best in Italy. The brand “Fiori Tipici del Lago Maggiore”, created in 1992, guarantees a high standard of quality in the production of flowers, and represents the purposeful evolution of a tradition that evolved from a spontaneous vocation to a highly specialised business, which make the west side of the lake into an actual "flower district". Flor-Coop in Nebbiuno includes some of the most important local flower producers and guarantees the observance of strict quality guidelines to guarantee excellent local products. Info: www.florcoop.com [20]
STRESA Since the mid-1800s, it has been an important international tourist destination, located in a strategic position in front of the Borromeo Islands (www.isoleborromee.it [21]). Many luxury hotels with Art Deco style architecture are located along the lake front road. It is the location of the Palazzo dei Congressi, which hosts international conventions, and the seat of the famous concert festival “Stresa Festival”. The Catholic spiritual philosopher Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855) died at Villa Ducale. He had founded the Istituto della Carità in 1828 in Domodossola, which was the first initiative of Rosminian Order. The "fishermen's island", ISOLA DEI PESCATORI, got its name from the typical occupation of its inhabitants. It has winding cobblestone alleys and characteristic coloured houses. A jewel of the island, the small Church of S. Vittore was built in the 11th century. Many good restaurants allow visitors to taste typical dishes of the lake area. Street vendors and shops can be found along the town's streets. Info: www.stresaturismo.it [22]
