Description of the itinerary
When you leave the car, clearly visible signs will show you the way to the start of the path.
After the motorway tunnel, a stone construction telling you to keep to the right along the path is also clearly visible. Proceed to the fork of Alpe Vedavia, then continue following the signs for Mount Camoscio. A brief rest is recommended here as the path climbs without respite from this point. You will reach the first destination after about an hour’s walk: Mount Camoscio, at an altitude of 890 metres above sea level, with its distinctive wooden cross. It offers a considerable viewpoint embracing the whole of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding mountains. From here you can proceed to the top of Mottarone or descend along the same path and return to the starting point. To continue (consider another climb of 650 metres and about 6 kilometres) follow the easy ridge to the chalets of Alpe Vedabia at an altitude of 900 metres a.s.l. Then follow an unpaved road to the sign indicating Mount Zughero. Continuing along the unpaved road, which once served the old granite quarry of Mount Zughero, you will reach the chalet that is the headquarters of the Italian Alpine Club of Baveno, on Alpe Nuovo at an altitude of 1205 metres a.s.l. Then follow the well-marked path to Mottarone, guided by the cables of the ski lift systems to the peak at 1,491 m. a.s.l. For the return journey we recommend returning from Stresa to Baveno by boat.
The peak offers a 360° view of Mount Rosa, Monviso, and six lakes.
