Madonna del Sasso

Excursion area
Madonna Del Sasso

Period
Spring-Autumn

Road access
To reach the starting point, take the A26 motorway towards Gravellona Toce, leaving at the exit for Arona. Continue towards Borgomanero/Gozzano: when you have passed the latter, follow the signs for San Maurizio d’Opaglio/Pella/Madonna del Sasso.

Description of the itinerary
The shrine of Madonna del Sasso overlooks Lake Orta and stands at an altitude of 638 metres in the town of the same name, Madonna del Sasso, overlooking a rocky outcrop of granite. a large square known as “il balcone del Cusio“ (the balcony of Cusio) lies in front of the church: an endless view can be admired from here, from the nearby mountains to the elusive contours of the Alps, a succession of pleasant villages in the valley below and finally, Novara, Vercelli and Milan can all be seen on a clear day.
Short route around the shrine, offering a breathtaking view and a play and picnic area dedicated to the stone masons, with a path of about 200 metres for the disabled. The walk can be extended, in the morning or afternoon, by following the lakeside itinerary of Pella, which is about 3 km long and takes about 2 hours: from here you can admire Lake Orta, the Island of San Giulio and Sacro Monte di Orta (highly recommended route).
