Description of the itinerary
Domodossola, natural capital of the Ossola Valley, is a lively town situated in the heart of Ossola. Nestled in the valley of the River Toce, at the foot of the historic hill of Mattarella and the Vagna hills, the old town still retains the feel of past medieval times. This city sees the development of cultural tourism as its winning card for the future. A real "Cultural Village" then, still to be discovered thanks to new and extensive renovation work being carried out throughout the city's old town: so a true, medieval centre has been revived, thanks to the systematic work that has reshaped the city’s image. From reassessment of the medieval wall system and the graphic-historic symbol representing it, to the redevelopment of its most important buildings and surrounding areas, the creation of this "Cultural Village" came about through exaltation of all the distinctive elements of historic interest existing within the ancient pentagonal walls: small squares and old, medieval buildings, distinctive porches and pretty alleys paved with local stone: a mix of architecture, art and history truly unique in its kind. Domodossola is also already part of Ossola’s network of museums and the addition of the “Cultural Village” reaffirms its role as the cultural heart of a land with an important history and beautiful nature.
