Description of the itinerary
Pella, on the western shore of Lake Orta, is one of the most historic and oldest villages in Cusio. It has been inhabited since the Iron Age, as proven by the recent discovery of a cupelled mass: along the ancient path of the stone cutters, several cupels can be seen carved into a rock, complete with drainage channels, probably used for fertility rituals.
The lakeside walk, which leads to the medieval tower and the pier, offers a different vantage point of the Island of San Giulio. Before entering the old town, the San Filiberto complex is definitely worth a visit. The church is the oldest chapel on the west coast of Lake Orta. Entering the village, you can see well-preserved buildings dating from the nineteenth century, such as the old hospital. In the heart of the village is the parish church dedicated to the bishop of Sant'Albino, dating back to 1516, which contains precious canvases, frescoes and paintings. Piazza Ravedoni is home to the old wash house, where the women of Pella could do the laundry even when the weather prevented them from approaching the lake. The presence of Sonzogno mill, now disused, is linked to the abundance of water the town enjoyed. Up to 1907 it produced the paper used by the noble Milanese publishing house that published "Il Secolo". The picture postcard bridge over Pellino, built in 1578, links the town to the oratory of San Rocco and the cemetery.
Continuing towards the hamlet of Ronco Sotto, follow the ancient path used by religious pilgrims linking the Sacro Monte of Orta to that of Varallo.
