San Giovanni Island

The Islet of Saint John, in the past known as Islet of Saint Angelo was home to the powerful De Castello family, local feudatories. It was later owned by the Pallanzese Collegiate, which established here its first seat. It was then turned over to the Borromeo family, who still own it. Many a famous personalities of the European culture staid here. Arturo Toscanini is remembered with a bust sculpted by Troubetzkoy, a bronze copy of which can be seen in the park of Villa Giulia. The immense park of romantic inspiration with terracing towards the south, slopes gradually down with wooded areas all along the declivities of the islet
