Autumn from the window: the magic of the Foliage train returns! From the 17th of October until the 15th of November get on board of the Vigezzina-Centovalli railway: an unforgettable autumn trip between Piedmont and Canton Ticino!

Despite the numerous limitations and regulations for the containment of Covid-19, the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway – Foliage Train has been confirmed also for autumn 2020. The trains that connect Domodossola, in high Piedmont, to Locarno, on the Swiss shore of Lake Maggiore, are chosen yearly between October and November from thousands of passengers, that can admire the autumnal inflamed landscapes. This is must-see experience, especially when on board of the railway that Lonely Planet rated as one of the world’s most beautiful.
The Vigezzina-Centovalli railway itinerary is an historical line that connect Italy and Switzerland since 1923: this year will become – from the 17th of October until the 15th of November – a multicolour painting with spectacular views and inflamed glimpses by autumnal colours. The tickets are valid from the 17th of October until the 15th of November and sold on The ticket is valid for one or two days and includes a return trip on the entire line, with the possibility to stop once, either on the way there or on the way back. Furthermore, it will be possible to visit one of the many fascinating towns present on the itinerary. Safety on board is guaranteed by constant sanitation measures and physical-social distancing, in addition to the obligation to wear a mask for the entire journey. A strong influx of visitors is expected and also due to the important limitations of Covid-19, seat reservations are mandatory: the advice is to hurry as the available seats are very limited. Another suggestion is to travel during weekdays. The price includes seat reservation and also any supplement to travel on board of the panoramic trains.
The news for 2020 is that the ticket includes (for each adult passenger) a voucher of 5 CHF to be spent at the small market of local products that will take place daily from 10 to 17 near the train station of Locarno. The wooden stands with a yellow rooftop will sell typical products of the Locarno area and the valleys around. It will be possible to start the trip either from Locarno (in Ticino Canton of Switzerland) or Domdossola (in Piedmont region of Italy). In Domodossola is possible to visit the beautiful Piazza Mercato and its marvellous historical palaces. Locarno is the arrival station for who depart from Italy and it is an appealing town on the shore of Lake Maggiore. The town has an elegant and fascinating Lake boulevard, an ancient heart to be discovered in the old part of the town, which is few steps away from Piazza Grande (the symbol of Locarno and of its Cinema Festival). A few kilometres away from Locarno, it is worth a visit the town of Ascona, a pearl with a Mediterranean charm, as well as a splendid village on Lake Maggiore reachable in a few minutes by bus. On Ascona’s Lake boulevard, elderlies and young can admire the romantic autumn version of the lake from an original and unusual perspective, which is the big swing of “Swing the World” project.
Despite the limitations due to Covid-19, several events have been scheduled during the Foliage Train period: starting from Locarno, where lovers of typical tastes cannot miss the 21st edition of the Gastronomic Autumn of Lake Maggiore and Valleys, planned until the 25th of October. Art and Culture are the main characters always in the heart of Ticino Canton with the unmissable exhibition “Klimt Experience” dedicated to the founder of ‘Secessione Viennese’ and the possibility to visit PalaCinema of Locarno. On the Italian route, the town of Santa Maria Maggiore organises on the 17 and 18 of October, the 15th edition of ‘Fuori di Zucca’: a fun and tasty occasion to discover the town and its autumnal events and local products markets.
Beyond Domodossola and Locarno, the railway counts many stops between Italy and Switzerland: the ticket of the Foliage Train includes one stop along the itinerary. Why don’t take advantage to visit the majestic Re Sanctuary or the marvellous town of Santa Maria Maggiore. Or again, in the Swiss portion of the itinerary, the towns of Intragna and Verdasio, where 3 cable cars departs to easily reach the high peaks and enjoy the foliage colours from a different view (the price of the cable cars is not included in the Foliage Trai ticket – the cable-car ticket can be purchased directly at the starting point of the cable car).
