Ossola: discover our mountain area, so easily!
Like a jump… from Lake Mergozzo (196 m a.s.l.) to Mount Rosa (4637 m), a central long plain where the big Toce river flows through slowly, surrounded by high mountain tops and seven smaller valleys. This is Ossola, so next to the Swiss border and so Italian thanks to its attractions, typical food, tradition and culture. Nature is any way the absolute protagonist there: alpine lakes, parks, forests and white slopes form the rich landscape beauty.
The largest Wilderness Area of the Alps (about 15.000 hectares) is enclosed between Lake Maggiore and Ossola, that is Val Grande. The European Wilderness Association declared Val Grande as the only area in Europe that completely maintains original environmental properties. It became a national park in 1992. There one can find nature-paths and visitors centres.
“Painters' Valley”, this is the traditional name of the Vigezzo Valley because of the important presence of great exponents of past painting. It is one of the most beloved Ossola valleys, appreciated both by national and international tourist. Let’s find the Vigezzini’s works of art in the Rossetti-Valentini Art Gallery in Santa Maria Maggiore or discover the valley splendor by travelling from Domodossola to Locarno (CH) on board of the nice “Vigezzina” little train.
The second highest European summit, Mount Rosa, represents the real jewel of the Anzasca Valley and its main tourist town, Macugnaga. There one is still able to appreciate the ancient Walser culture by looking at the town typical houses or people’s feast clothes. A cable way leads you up to the Mount Moro, while a chairlift to the Belvedere natural terrace. Once there the eye-view is breath-taking.
From the Bognanco Valley or “valley of 100 waterfalls”, paradise for canyoning and hiking lovers, to the Antrona Valley, lately declared Regional Nature Park, and the Antigorio-Divedro-Formazza Valleys, with the famous 145 m high Toce Waterfall: an ideal mix to live your holiday immersed in the most uncontaminated Ossola nature.
Don’t wait then! Come to green, pure, wild Ossola and enjoy a complete mountain experience!
