ORNAVASSO - "Luce", Elisabeth Scherffig's exhibition

The Madonna della Guardia shrine in Ornavasso is hosting Elisabeth Scherffig's exhibition 'Luce'(Light). More than 60 sculptures by the renowned German artist are arranged around a cross-shaped iron installation set in the middle of the building. This massive piece of art has got ten embroidered silk panels and its shape draws on the structure of the building, thus enhancing the beauty of the shrine. The exhibition runs from 4th until 12th, September, and it's open every day from 3 to 6 pm. On the 4th, 5th, 8th, 11th and 12th September it is open from 10 to 12 pm as well.
Museum visitors will have the chance to visit the shrine of Immacolata Concezione di Maria Vergine after a 20-year restoration. The octagonal building is widely known as 'La Guardia" due to the presence of a 14th-century watchtower near it. To reach La Guardia from the centre of Ornavasso take the road to Santuario del Boden and follow it for 1 km. After the museum you can also visit the ancient quarry, which is just a few curves away. It is a 200-metre tunnel that takes you to the heart of the mountain, where the pink marble used for the Duomo of Milan was extracted.
