VISIT TO THE ANCIENT QUARRY OF ORNAVASSO, MARBLE USED IN THE DUOMO CATHEDRAL IN MILAN, AND TO THE NATURALISTIC AREA – FAMILY EXCURSIONS IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS.

Special bus service every Wednesday, from 6th July to 14th September, to the historic, archaeological and naturalistic area of Ornavasso, at the special price of 1.10 Euros. Booking not required. Numerous walks are possible (from 1 hour to the entire day) and indoor visits in the event of bad weather.

A 200-metre tunnel runs through the ancient quarry to the heart of the mountain and the grand hall of marble. Ornavasso’s marble has been used since the 14th-century for the Duomo cathedral in Milan and other renowned monuments (audio tour of the quarry 6.00 Euros – children staying in the camp sites – up to 12 years old – free of charge). A shuttle bus runs between the camp sites on Lake Maggiore and the ancient quarry, the Boden, della Guardia and Oropa of Migiandone sanctuaries and the artisan sculpture workshop that carves the spires of the Duomo cathedral in Milan. The monuments are connected by the shuttle bus and numerous walks, easy and suitable for families, between the passages and trenches of the military fortifications of the First World War, through the naturalistic area with a view of the lakes and the Val Grande National Park. Free picnic areas, Nordic walking park, public playground, restaurants with typical menus.

The area can be reached directly from the Fondotoce camp sites either by car (10 minutes), on the cycle paths along the River Toce (about 40 minutes) or by public transport. Itineraries suitable for mountain bikes and trekking with the opportunity to reach the Italian Alpine Club’s refuge (Alpe Cortevecchio - 1500 mt) – open all summer with a restaurant service (2 and a half hours from Boden of Ornavasso – on foot or by mountain bike).
