Among conifer woods and alpine lawns Formazza Valley hides an extraordinary "jewel", the second highest waterfall in Europe.
Its 143 meters-high and 60 meters-large (on the basis) fall is fed by an extremely pure mountain spring nearby Gries Pass (2463 meters altitude), which separates Italy from Switzerland and through which in 1852 Richard Wagner went to begin then his grand tour in Italy.
Spring waters are normally collected in great artificial Lake Morasco from which, only in some periods during the year (in summer, in particular), they can flow towards the bottom of the valley creating the waterfall spectacle.
There is a small wooden bridge over the waterfall top. There the panoramic point of view of the valley below is terrific and dizzy at the same time!
Opposite to the fall there is a historical buiding, which was created in 1863 as hotel to host hikers and mountaineers. Next to it a small nice church of 1621 is dedicated to the "Madonna della Neve".
This year the waterfall will be open for visitors from June with the following calendar:
- from June 12th to September 30th: working days from 11.30 to 13.30, Sundays and public holidays from 10 to 16;
- from August 10th to 20th from 10 to 16;
- August 15th and 16th from 10 to 18.
Toce Waterfall is also being the amazing scenery for the “Fiori di Fuoco” 2010 Fireworks World Championship opening night. This first show is being performed by famous Italian Parente Fireworks Company and could be a special occasion to admire this natural miracle together with thousands of lights and colours.
